Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM):

IASTM, an alternative intervention, is a cutting-edge form of myofascial mobilization, utilizing instruments to release scar tissue, adhesions and other restrictions.  When soft tissue injuries occur, scar tissue and adhesions form as a result of fibers lying down in an abnormal pattern.  This phenomenon can limit joint range of motion, promote incorrect movement patterns and cause pain.  The primary goal of IASTM is to provide a controlled initiation of the inflammatory/healing process allowing fibers to lie down in a more correct and parallel pattern.  This will promote increased joint range of motion, efficient movement patterns and decreased pain.

IASTM can also benefit individuals in the sports and fitness industries. The instruments can be used before, during, or after activity by allowing increased blood flow to the muscles and reducing discomfort from muscle spasms and soreness.

Corrective Exercise

Therapeutic exercises, a traditional intervention, are a range of activities that help restore and build strength, endurance, flexibility and stability.  Strategies include, but not limited to, body weight, bands and foam rolling, which all can be done pre- or post activity.  Exercises can be included in a treatment session as well as given through a Home Exercise Program (HEP).  In order to reduce symptoms, improve functional mobility and prevent injuries, following though with a HEP and maintenance program is critical. Therapeutic exercises can also be utilized in conjunction with IASTM technique and Kinesio taping method to maximize their outcomes.

Cupping Exercise

Cupping is an ancient form of alternative medicine where cups are placed on the skin to create suction over the targeted area.  Cupping provides many purposes, including treating pain, scar tissue, adhesions, inflammation, promote blood flow, relaxation and detoxing.

Dry Needling

A skilled technique that is utilized to treat muscular trigger points for pain management, to improve movement impairments and to restore function.  It is a safe and effective procedure that involves the use of a thin monofilament needle that is placed in the desired muscle tissue of the body.  The needle can help with decreasing muscle tightness, increase blood flow to the region and reduce local/referred pain.

Kinesio Taping

Kinesio taping, an alternative intervention, is a rehabilitative technique that provides support and stability to muscles and joints without restrictions to joint range of motion.  Kinesio tape lifts the skin, creating convulsions, allowing blood flow and lymph fluid to flow easier in constricted areas.  Ultimately, taking pressure off of neuro receptors, increasing circulation, decreasing inflammation and subsequently decreasing pain.

The latex-free tape has the ability to relax or stimulate/facilitate muscles and re-educate the neuromuscular system by providing a proprioceptive response.  This benefit of the kinesio taping method is ideal for athletes and individuals in the fitness industry.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is a specific hands-on traditional technique that provides a manual force to a specific region of the body.  Techniques include manipulation, mobilization and massage performed to increase joint range of motion, decrease inflammation, induce relaxation, improve stability and overall function.  IASTM technique and Kinesio taping method can work in conjunction with manual therapy to prolong its benefits.
